APRIL

MONDAY APRIL 23

HIGHSIDE PLAYING FIELDS ASSOCIATION AGM - This meeting takes place at the Pavilion tonight at 7.30pm (originally scheduled for Thursday) - anyone interested in the Playing Fields is welcome to attend.

FRIDAY APRIL 27

QUIZ NIGHT - The bar opens at 7.30pm and the quiz starts at 8pm prompt when its Quiz night at the Mechanics in Kirkby. It costs £3 per person - max 6 people per team - and includes a light supper. Plus there's a raffle!

MONDAY APRIL 30

ANNUAL PARISH MEETING and PARISH COUNCIL MEETING - The Annual Parish Meeting will take place this evening in the annex of the Mechanics Institute starting at 7.15pm.  This will be followed by the final monthly meeting for this Council before a new Council takes over on May. It will commence once the Annual Parish Meeting has finished but no earlier than 7.20pm.

WEDNESDAY MAY 2

KIRKBY MALZEARD WOMEN'S INSTITUTE - The speaker at tonight's meeting at the Mechanics Institute is Andrew Wilcox who will be talking about his 10 years at Harlow Carr. The meeting starts at 7.15pm. 

THURSDAY MAY 3

ELECTIONS - Votes will be cast today to select the Masham and Kirkby Malzeard Ward Councillor who will serve on Harrogate Borough Council for the next four years. Previously Cllr Margaret Atkinson represented our area as District Councillor but following boundary changes our Parish is now incorporated with Masham and we will have a new Councillor. Cllr Atkinson remains as our representative on North Yorkshire County Council. There will not be any Parish Council elections as both Kirkby Malzeard and Laverton/Dallowgill seats were uncontested - further details are available on the Parish Council website. 

FRIDAY MAY 4

MUSIC CLUB - The monthly Music night at the Mechanics starts tonight at 8pm with the bar open from 7.30pm. Everyone welcome to play, sing or just listen. £2 per person with under 13's free.

SATURDAY MAY 5

FLOWER FESTIVAL - St Andrew's Church will be open from 9am-4pm to view the floral decorations created by local enthusiasts.

SUNDAY MAY 6

TOUR DE YORKSHIRE - The tour cycles through Kirkby Malzeard and Laverton on May 6 for the first time and there are a number of events for you to enjoy throughout Kirkby Malzeard village before the Mens Race arrives at approx. 3.15pm including:

MECHANICS INSTITUTE - Full TV coverage of the race as it approaches this area - Exhibition showcasing local businesses - Refreshments available.

HIGHSIDE PLAYING FIELDS - Lots of things for the kids including Slow Bike Race, Obstacle course, Change the inner tube competition, best dressed bicycle, face painting etc with BARBEQUE from 12noon onwards. Classic car display.

BEST DRESSED HOUSE COMPETITION - Dress up your house with bunting (and anything else you can think of) and you will be automatically entered into this competition with two major prizes up for grabs. Properties in Kirkby and Laverton will be judged by the WI on the morning of the race.

ART EXHIBITION - METHODIST CHAPEL - Paintings on a Tour de Yorkshire theme by local school children will be on show together with Art by two well known local artists Mike Harford Cross and Stephen Weld. Refreshments available.

FLOWER FESTIVAL - ST ANDREWS CHURCH - The Church will be open from 9am to 4pm with refreshments from 11.30am to 4pm. Floral displays including some on a bicycling theme by local enthusiasts.

MAIN STREET - Plenty else going on with Reeth Brass band between 11.00 and 1.00, impromtu music on the lawn of the Antique Shop, Ice Cream van and a pop-up prosecco bar...... Please see the separate Tour de Yorkshire page on this website for more information.

BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY MAY 7

PLANT STALL/COFFEE MORNING/RAFFLE - The fund-raising Annual Plant Stall on behalf of the Flower and Produce Show will take place at the Mechanics Institute this morning, together with a Raffle on behalf of Kirkby in Bloom and a coffee morning for the Mechanics Institute, Everything starts at 9.30am.

FLOWER FESTIVAL - The flower festival at the Church reaches its final day today running from 9.00am to 4.00pm.

TUESDAY MAY 8

COFFEE MORNING - The Methodist Chapel in Kirkby Malzeard will be open this morning from 10am -12 noon serving tea/coffee and homemade biscuits/toast. Everyone welcome.

SUNDAY MAY 13 

KIRKBY IN BLOOM - A garden visit to Low Hall Garden, Dacre Banks has been arranged. This is a romantic walled garden with Spring flowers and bulbs. Woodlands Cottage at Summerbridge which has a bluebell woodland is also on the itinery. More information from Beccy Mann 01765 650374 if you would like to go along.

KIRKBY MALZEARD PLAYERS PROUDLY PRESENT TWO SHORT COMEDY PLAYS -

"Last Tango in Kirkby Malzeard" by David Tristram - The local Amateur Dramatics Society is in trouble. The membership has dwindled to four and if they don't come up with some rent money soon, they're going to be thrown out, "There's only one thing that sells tickets these days" argues Gordon. "Sex!" 

"Theatrical Digs" by Jean McConnell - the tale of two ladies who reluctantly meet up on the seaside esplanade and a sparring match of intrigue develops.

Doors open at the Mechanics Institute at 7.00pm. Bar refreshments available. Tickets will be on sale 16 April at Kirkby Stores or from Paul Cookson tel 650067.

DALLOWGILL WALK - The annual walk through Dallowgill is a little later this year but will follow a route of about 5 miles through the countryside and end up with Tea at Greygarth Chapel. Registration is at 1pm with the walk commencing at 1.30pm. Full details to follow.

TEA @ 3 - Fund raising event for St Michaels Hospice at the Mechanics Institute from 2pm to 4pm. Various stalls including Cake stall, Plant stall, Bric-a-brac, Book Stall, Stall of new items, Toy Competition and Raffle.

Tickets now on sale - £40 - by contacting Peter Cooper on petersuecooper09@btinternet.com. 3 course dinner (catering by Chimes Restaurant in Ripon), pre-ordered wine, live music from six-piece band Sugertown, bar serving Black Sheep ale all in a large marquee on the playing fields.
