Summer would not be the same in the heart of an English village, let alone a Yorkshire village, without a local cricket team to either play for, or support. The Kirkby Malzeard cricket club plays it's home games on a Saturday afternoon at the Highside Playing Fields taking on opposition in Division 4 of the Theakston Nidderdale League, starting at 1.30 pm.

There was some success at the start of the season but since then its been a bit hard going - however the team registered its first victory for a while last Saturday when they beat Sessay 3rd XI. Kirkby batted first and made 137 for 9 from their 45 overs with C Nattress top scoring with 50 and I C Fraser also making 29 not out. In reply Sessay could only manage 87 all out with P Kirk taking 2 for 14, S Moss 2 for 13 and I Fraser, with the best figures for the team for a long time, returning 3 wickets for only 8 runs

Kirkby are still second from bottom have won 3 lost 12 and having had two matches abandoned.

Their next game is away at Alne 2nd on August 19 with a  1.30 pm start.The remaining matches this season are at home to Studley Royal 3rd on August 26, away at Sharow on September 2, home to Thornton Watlass on September 9 and finally at home to Sharow on September 16.
