Summer would not be the same in the heart of an English village, let alone a Yorkshire village, without a local cricket team to either play for, or support. Kirkby Malzeard Cricket Club plays it's home games on a Saturday afternoon at the Highside Playing Fields taking on opposition in Division 5 of the Theakston Nidderdale League, starting at 1.30 pm.

The club is always on the look-out for new players to strengthen its squad so if you are interested contact Iain Fraser on 658292 or Peter Kirk on 07983442477. The outdoor nets practice sessions are on Thursadys at 6.30pm and there will also be coaching for juniors on Saturday mornings during the season - Iain or Peter can give you more details if you are interested.

The relegation battle went down to the last game of last season but unfortunately Kirkby just fell short of the points needed to stay up and so are playing this season as one of 12 teams in Division 5.

Having lost seven and won six of their games so far the team were at home again last Saturday when they entertained Crakehall. Kirkby batted first and made a respectable 203 for 9 with 51 from Henry Wilcox and 42 from Brad Atkinson. In reply however Crakehall reached 204 for 4 with the best bowling figures being Rob Montgomery who took 2 for 55. The team is in a comfortable 7th place in the table.

On August 18 they will be at home to Harrogate 4th XI with a 1.30pm start.
