Summer would not be the same in the heart of an English village, let alone a Yorkshire village, without a local cricket team to either play for, or support. The Kirkby Malzeard cricket club plays it's home games on a Saturday afternoon at the Highside Playing Fields taking on opposition in Division 4 of the Theakston Nidderdale League, starting at 1.30 pm.

The club is always on the look-out for new players to strengthen its squad so if you are interested contact Iain Fraser at

The relegation battle went down to the last game of the season but unfortunately Kirkby lost to Sharow on September 16 and therefore finished second from bottom and as a result will be playing in Division 5 next year. Sharow batted first and made 169 for 8 with R Montgomery taking 2 for 46 and I Fraser taking 2 for 47. In reply Kirkby could only manage 131 for 8 from their 45 overs with C Nattress top scoring with 45.

Over the season Kirkby won 5 lost 14 and there were 3 abandoned games - they finished with 44 points only 1 point below the team finishing third bottom who survived relegation. Hopefully next season against weaker opposition they will have more success.
