Summer would not be the same in the heart of an English village, let alone a Yorkshire village, without a local cricket team to either play for, or support. Kirkby Malzeard Cricket Club plays it's home games on a Saturday afternoon at the Highside Playing Fields taking on opposition in Division 5 of the Theakston Nidderdale League, starting at 1.30 pm.

The club is always on the look-out for new players to strengthen its squad so if you are interested contact Iain Fraser on 658292 or Peter Kirk on 07983442477. The outdoor nets practice sessions are on Thursadys at 6.30pm and there will also be coaching for juniors on Saturday mornings during the season - Iain or Peter can give you more details if you are interested.

The relegation battle went down to the last game of last season but unfortunately Kirkby just fell short of the points needed to stay up and so start this season in Division 5.

Having lost three and won three of their first six games the side played Harrogate 4th XI a week last Saturday but suffered another defeat. They batted first and made 129 for 7 from their 40 overs with 32 not out from Nelum Silva and 24 from Isaac Fraser. They could do little against the Harrogate batsmen however who made 131 for 1 off 24.1 overs.

They were due to play Masham 2nd XI on June 23 but their opponents conceded the game. The next scheduled game is at home to Newton-le-Willows with a 1.30pm start. Kirkby are currently 7th in the table.
